From traditional experiences to modern takes on this classic cuisine, the Bay area is home to a multitude of amazing options for your next night out. Biden visited Tampa Bay several times as vice president, including once on the eve of the 2016 election, when he appeared at a St. Petersburg rally alongside singer Jimmy Buffett. But he’s only been here once as president, on Feb. 9 of last year, when he spoke about health care at the University of Tampa days after the State of the Union address. He was scheduled to visit in July 2022, but the trip was called off when he tested positive for COVID-19. But the heart of the meal starts with USDA Prime steaks, dry-aged at least 45-days (which is extra generous in the industry) and cut in house, something only a handful of the best steakhouses do.

Since opening, Malio lavarone and his family have provided clientele with the finest dining experience possible. “Malio’s has earned a reputation for serving the finest quality food along with superior service and an elevated atmosphere,” Malio’s Owner Derek Iavarone says. “We look forward to providing you with a memorable dining experience at one of Tampa’s oldest premier family-owned steakhouses.”Serving USDA Prime Beef, fresh seafood and a selection of over 200 wines, Malio’s has been satisfying Tampa Bay for over 50 years.

While gardening and producing a gardening newsletter he and his wife opened a small luncheonette which served juice, coffee and cold sandwiches. It was a hit and soon they eventually added hot breakfast and lunch. All of this was in the early Fifties, long before anyone had coined the terms “farm to table” or “localvore,” but from the beginning, Bern and Gert emphasized the best ingredients possible including fresh veggies and fruit from his own gardens. 70 Years later Bern’s is still doing what has recently become trendy among top chefs elsewhere and growing its own. A few years after opening, they moved to a new space and added steaks, and the rest is restaurant history. What is now the Bordeaux Room in Bern’s was once the entire steakhouse, and it has been added to and expanded again and again.
Rare and well done: Bern’s Steak House is a Tampa legend
There is a staggering array of dessert wines, fortified wines and rare whiskies by the glass, with many tasting flight options. And it is like two different superb dining out experiences wrapped into one great meal, and again, something you just cannot do at other top steakhouses. A signature part of what makes Bern’s Bern’s is the dessert course, and some locals come just for it. It is still family owned (Bern and Gert’s son), and clearly a passion project. I will absolutely eat there any time I go to Tampa, I may go back to Tampa sooner just to eat there. A Tampa institution, Malio’s legacy dates back to 1969.

A local fine dining staple, Charley’s serves prime steaks, market-fresh seafood and chef-driven appetizers.“Charley’s Steak House has been the goto spot in Tampa for the past 25 years,” says Charley’s Vice President and COO Seth Miller. “From our overfilled martinis to the citrus and oak wood-grilled, melt-in-your-mouth steaks, you’ll be part of the family from your first visit. ”With prime steaks aged to perfection and cooked over a custom-built, wood-fired pit, Charley’s is Tampa’s choice for a traditional steakhouse experience. A Tampa tradition since 1956, Bern’s Steak House is Tampa’s award-winning fine dining institution. “We strive for perfection in all aspects of service and food,” explains Bern’s President and Owner David Laxer. From the moment you set foot in the lobby to the last Bern’s cappuccino in the Harry Waugh Dessert Room, everyone is made to feel exceptional.

As time marched on, Bern and Gert gradually bought adjoining shops and grew Bern’s from one to eight dining rooms and from 40 to 350 seats. Finally, the famous Harry Waugh Dessert Room was built in 1985, using redwood wine casks to create 48 private rooms where guests, to this day, enjoy nearly 50 desserts, wines, ports, sherries and madeiras. Bern Laxer was a World War II vet and passionate gardener who visited his aunt in Tampa with his new bride, Gert, and never left.
I just returned to Tampa for the first time in years to catch a couple of Yankees spring training games, and even before I bought airline tickets I made a reservation for Bern’s way in advance, because they are always really hard to get. But if any travel takes you to Tampa, it is absolutely worth the effort. All the city’s essential spots for seafood platters, steaks, Cubans, and more. He did not, however, come in 2008 to campaign locally for Republican presidential contender John McCain, in part because Bush’s low approval ratings were seen as a negative. The Republican president came down so frequently — an average of about twice a year — that it’s hard to keep track of all his travels.
If your generationally wealthy friend from England opened a steakhouse in their parents’ old manor, it’d probably feel a lot like Bern’s. The lobby is all gilded furniture and ruby lights, and there are eight different dining rooms lined with wall-to-wall photos from the founder's travels to Bordeaux, Burgundy, and beyond. Every meat on the menu is given its own paragraph explanation, which sounds like it was written by someone who's an e-commerce copywriter by day and a steak scholar by night. The Delmonico that they dry-age for 100 days is always our go-to. Like Obama, Bush was an active campaigner in Tampa Bay, visiting at least five times between February and October 2004 during his reelection race against John Kerry. During one visit, he campaigned in New Port Richey — one of the few times a sitting president has ever visited Pasco County — and stayed at the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Pete Beach.
We love being a mainstay of the Tampa Bay landscape.”With a well-earned reputation for culinary excellence, Bern’s features premium in-house, dry-aged steaks, one of the largest wine collections in the world and an internationally renowned dessert room. Not long after opening the bar, the Laxers learned that the man who sold them Beer Haven had done so without permission from the landlord. With the landlord threatening not to renew their lease, due to his disapproval of alcohol sales, Bern and Gert agreed to go back into the food business and became a restaurant, once again. The Laxers labored seven days a week, Bern as the cook and dishwasher and Gert as waitress, hostess and second dishwasher, as they served breakfast, lunch and dinner with beer and coffee in between.
The Bordeaux Room held 40 diners and today there are eight dining rooms seating 350 guests and serving about 500 nightly. For decades, this stately steakhouse has been a local favorite for special occasions of all stripes, and its popularity shows no signs of shrinking. Don’t fill up on the assorted sides—at the end of the meal, guests are whisked to the posh upstairs dessert room, where bananas Foster or baked Alaska can be enjoyed with house-roasted coffee and live piano music.
If you’ve never been to Bern’s, like me, you might envision a stuffy atmosphere with hushed chatter, it is not. It’s people talking, laughing and fully enjoying the evening. This isn’t a place to eat dinner quickly before you go to something else. I’m a woman that appreciates a good steak and wine, so the fact that I had never visited Bern’s Steak House before is problematic, on a few levels, including the fact that I’m born and raised here and have no good excuse.
[+] fortified wines and specialty cocktails and coffees. The upstairs is 48 private dessert booths, each crafted from wooden wine vats. Each member of the staff goes to great lengths to make sure you are well-taken care of, from going over the menu to making recommendations on wine pairings. Bern and Gert spent five days a week working at the luncheonette while Saturdays were reserved for shopping, cleaning, scrubbing and making repairs to prepare for the week ahead.
We offer oysters, escargot, 16 different caviars and many other mouth-watering selections. Each visit to Bern’s Steak House takes you on a gastronomic adventure that defines Bern’s not as a meal but as an experience. Our dining room dress code is business casual to semi-formal. If you are dressed in more relaxed attire, you may be seated in our lounge area instead of the main dining rooms.
But what almost no other top steakhouses do is offer you anything with your steak. These places are typically expensive and very much a la carte. All of that comes with each steak, which are priced lower than almost all other top steakhouses to begin with. A 12-ounce dry-aged NY Strip is $60 with all the extras, and two weeks earlier I ate at a high-end chain steakhouse where a not as good one was $72 with nothing. All the standard steaks at Bern's are USDA Prime, dry-aged in house for at least 45-days, hand cut ...
